Search Engines

  • MEDLINE/PUBMED: MEDLINE is an online bibliographic database that was started in the 1960's by the National Library of Medicine, and is now the premier bibliographic database for medical information. The database stores over 15 million citations, with about 400,000 new articles being added per year.
  • MedScape - DrugInfo - an excellent database for most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States, includes links to detailed product monograph. 

  • Google - The well known internet searching tool is an excellent general purpose search engine for medical information.

General Medical Information

  • eMedicine - Launched in 1996, this site comprises the largest and most current Clinical Knowledge Base available to physicians and health professionals. Nearly 10,000 physician authors and editors contribute to the eMedicine The evidence-based content-updated 24/7-provides the latest practice guidelines in 62 medical specialties. eMedicine's professional content undergoes 4 levels of physician peer review plus an additional review by a PharmD. eMedicine's professional and institutional subscription site is www.iMedicine.com.
  • MedScape: Provide clinicians and other healthcare professionals with the clinical information and updates. The site is organized by medical specialty.
  • The Merck Manual: This widely recognized tool is now available online, free of charge.

  • Abbreviations Glossary - Glossary of medical terms, compiled by JDMD- a U.S. case evaluation firm

  • mediLexicon: Formerly Pharma-Lexicon. A dictionary of over 200,000 medical, pharmaceutical, biomedical & healthcare acronyms and abbreviations. Plus medical news and searches for the medical, pharmaceutical or healthcare professional.

Medical Illustrators

  • LifeART: This site has a vast array of medical clip art. Many images are offered in 3-D. Search for an illustration by key word or using drop-down menus for body part, body system or medical specialty. Images can be purchased individually or as part of a larger specialty collection.
  • Lido: This site features a database containing more than 10,000 full-colour, handcrafted medical illustrations and reusable exhibits. Each illustration or exhibit can be downloaded directly to the subscriber's PC, where it can be printed or added to a document or presentation. It also provides referrals to medical illustration service providers.
  • Whole Brain Atlas: This site houses a collection of images of normal and dysfunctional brains, including brains that have suffered strokes, tumours and Alzheimer's disease. The site integrates images from MRI, X-ray computed tomography and nuclear medicine.
  • Artery Studios: Site of Toronto medico-legal illustrator Stephen Mader. Includes example illustrations.
  • Nucleus Medical Art: creates and/or licenses illustrations, animations, drawings, graphics and models.
  • Google Image Search: an image search facility which can be very useful for finding medical illustrations.
  • Hardin Meta Directory - Medical Pictures: Some limited medical graphics organized by topic

Government/NGOs

  • Health Canada On-Line: The web site of Health Canada, includes the latest advisories, warnings and recalls.
  • Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care: The ministry is responsible for administering the health care system and providing services to the Ontario public through such programs as health insurance, drug benefits, assistive devices, care for the mentally ill, long-term care, home care, community and public health, and health promotion and disease prevention. It also regulates hospitals and nursing homes, operates psychiatric hospitals and medical laboratories, and co-ordinates emergency health services.

  • Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP): OHIP is the publicly funded Medicare insurance program in Ontario. This site answers many common questions.
